The Indie Writer Experience
I am an indie writer, and it's an experience that I cherish. I have the freedom to write about whomever I want and whatever I want without fear of losing everything.
I was not an English major. I have never attended a “writing workshop.” I still put punctuation in the wrong place inside quotation marks. My writing “process” mostly involves talking to my cat, and my favorite place to write is at my mother’s old sewing table, with my cat purring next to me. It’s not glamorous, but it’s where the stories live.
I use real-life situations and a lot of imagination to inspire my storytelling. I try to make heroes out of everyday moments that most people overlook. Doing the right thing is rarely publicized, even though when it happens, it probably should be shouted from the mountaintops.
The stories my characters live may seem ordinary and that’s because they are -- but those stories deserve to be told. The dream of a great relationship, children who grow up to care for aging parents, or spouses who stand by each other through life’s hard moments—those stories matter.
If you think you have a book in you, then write it. Lose yourself in the characters and the moment. Pray for the five-star reviews, but cherish the two-star reviews because they make you a better writer. Be proud of the moment and the accomplishment, whether you win awards or make money.
I write because I love to imagine and create.
If that sounds like something that stirs your soul, give it a try... I can promise that you'll never regret it. I know that I don't!
